McHenry, MD – The Garrett Choral Society is thrilled to announce its annual spring concert, “The Sound of Water: An Afternoon of Water Music,” to be held on Sunday, May 19th, 2024, at 3:00 PM at the Performing Arts Center at Garrett College. This year’s theme promises an immersive auditory journey through water-themed music, reflecting the fluidity and transformative power of water in various musical traditions.

Under the skilled direction of Debi Beachy and the talents of Accompanist/Director, Dr. Sean Beachy, the concert will feature an eclectic mix of music. Attendees can look forward to a rich selection of African-American spirituals, which often incorporate water as a symbolic element, alongside popular hits such as the Beatles’ “Across the Universe,” Bob Dylan’s “The Times They Are A-Changin’,” and Toto’s “Africa.” The concert will also include spiritual pieces from the Native American tradition and innovative modern compositions, offering something for every musical taste.

Music is known for its profound effects on well-being, capable of soothing or energizing its listeners. “In choral singing, we create a community of singers and a connection to our audience,” says a spokesperson for the society. “There are documented health, social, and emotional benefits to this art form.”

This season, approximately 40 dedicated volunteers and passionate singers make up the choir, their voices uniting to celebrate and uplift. The concert is made possible with the support of the Garrett County Arts Council, reflecting the community’s commitment to fostering the arts.

The Garrett Choral Society invites everyone to come and have their souls refreshed by the spirit of water music. Join us for an afternoon that promises not only to entertain but also to enrich your spirit.
