Garrett Highlands Pipes and Drums is playing its annual Autumn Glory Concert on Saturday, October 10 at 10:30AM at the Oakland Volunteer Fire Department, 31 S. 3rd St.
GHPD is a traditional Scottish military marching band founded by Fred Thayer, Chip Evans, and John Grant. Pipe Majors have included Thayer, Gerald McGee, and presently Paul Browning.
The band wears the Colquhoun tartan for the Hon. Fred Thayer and wears a Grant swatch on the Glengarry bonnet to honor the Rev. John Grant. GHPD is proudly affiliated with the OVFD.
Among many events GHPD played the White Water World Championship opening ceremonies at FSU in 1989, and in 2002 played for the dedication of the Flight #93 Memorial Chapel in Shanksville, PA. Locally, GHPD plays annually at Memorial Day at the historic Oakland Cemetery on 4th St. and at the Vietnam Memorial at 3rd St. and Rt.219.
In addition to the CONCERT ON OCTOBER 10, GHPD attends other regional events including the Autumn Glory Feature Parade at 1:00 following the concert, the Garrett County Celtic Festival on the first Saturday in June as the host band, the 4th of July Parade in Accident, and the West Virginia Celtic and Highland Games and St. Patrick’s Day and Christmas events.
Band members share many of the same interests and pastimes related to Scottish Highland traditions. GHPD is a teaching
band, interested in new pipers, drummers, and auxiliary members (flags and banner in parades.) Practice meets March – December on Monday nights 7:00 (6:00 for students) at the Oakland Volunteer Fire Department, 31 S. 3rd St
