January 2023 Issue
It’s 2023, a year that, for someone my age anyway, sounds straight out of a science fiction novel. January brings its own vibe and activities with it, especially if you enjoy the outdoors. Between our beautiful state parks and Wisp Resort, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the season and get plenty of exercise. A great way to start the year are Maryland’s First Day Hikes, an event that takes you throughout the state in our beautiful parks. See ways to start your new year off on the right track with information about Garrett County First Day Hikes starting on Page 22. Mark your calendars for more winter fun heading through February as well.
If you have skied on Wisp Mountain with any regularity, you’ve seen our local Deep Creek Lions at work with their Blind Skier program. Youth and adults from all over the state come to Wisp Resort throughout ski season, and with the help of area volunteers, learn to ski and enjoy time at the tubing park. In February, the Deep Creek Lake Lions will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of this amazing program. Learn more about it in our Feature Story starting on Page 6, and make plans to attend their Anniversary Gala on February 7th.
Our Unsung Hero’s column continues this month with a look at Ariel Robinson, local philosopher and Renaissance Man. Read more about him on Page 14 and remember if YOU have somebody to nominate, please email us with information!
Hoping your New Year is filled with health and happiness. Thanks for reading!
