If you’ve not been to downtown Oakland recently, you’ve missed a lot. The townspeople and business owners have been working hard to revitalize the area and with several new businesses and events happening, Oakland is the place to be. One place that remains a constant, however, is The Painted Cupboard and its alter ego, The Chic Shack.
Most locals are very familiar with The Painted Cupboard, featuring one-of-a-kind primitive country wares and decor, which was an immediate hit when it opened in May of 2005. Because owner Sabrina Liggett offers an ever-changing variety, the shop has remained popular, especially during the Christmas season, when owner Sabrina Liggett, her husband Jim, and a few helpful elves transform the entire shop into a Christmas wonderland filled with unique holiday items for gift giving or to liven up your own decor.
This is Sabrina’s 14th Christmas in the shop and her decorations, especially the window display, are looked forward to all year. She follows trends carefully and always offers the latest in country decor.
“This year we have lots of ornaments as they remain very popular and make a perfect hostess gift or stocking stuffer,” says Sabrina. The most popular this season are made of felted wool which she offers in a variety of sizes and configurations many of which reside on the many beautifully decorated trees within the shop.
“Rustic is also very in this year,” she adds. “We have decorative skis, birdhouses and lanterns…lots of every day items that can be mixed in with your holiday decor then still used year round.”
In addition to the trees, you’ll find berry wreaths in many colorful configurations, hand painted holiday and inspirational signs in a farmhouse motif, and one of their most popular items, lighted canvas prints. Of course, the main symbol of winter is the snowman and Sabrina has tons of them made from a variety of materials. “Snowmen are more seasonal than Santa’s,” explains Sabrina. “You can enjoy them longer.”
You’ll also find the many every-day items that have made The Painted Cupboard such a must see shopping experience including linens, prints, handmade baskets, rugs, soaps and other American made goods. You’ll also find a nice variety of primitive, country furniture hand-made by Jim. Looking for a specific size or piece? Custom orders are available.
Candles also make great stocking stuffers and their featured line of Herbal Star Soy candles comes in a variety of fragrances, several perfect for the holiday celebrations. She also has potpourri, which is available for sale by the cup so you can buy exactly the quantity you need.
Located within The Painted Cupboard is The Chic Shack, small on space but large on selection and style. This tiny shop within a shop is accessory heaven and carries a nice line of scarves, purses, jewelry and an expanded line of shawls and sweaters, sure to brighten up even the darkest days of winter.
These unique, one of a kind pieces are perfect for any age woman on your list and include a line of bags by Joy Susan, tunics, tops and dresses by Mountain Mama and a gorgeous selection of costume jewelry.
