Subway Sandwich Shops have been a favorite lunch shop around the country for over 50 years.  Known as a quick, nutritious meal option for the entire family, it was first started as a sub shop by two enterprising college students in Hartford, Connecticut.  Today it is the largest string of sandwich shops in the world with over 40,000 locations in 100 countries.

Locally, there are several franchises but none more popular than the one located at Traders Landing at Deep Creek Lake.  The shop closed late last year but has been purchased and recently re-opened by local entrepreneur Bill Meagher, who saw an opportunity to bring affordable dining options to locals and vacationers in the area, but also as a way to provide year-round employment to some of his loyal staff.

Bill is the owner of several lake area businesses including Lakeside Creamery, Copper Kettle Popcorn Factory, FunTime WaterSports and Deep Creek Donuts.  Many of the jobs he offers there are seasonal in nature but he has some really wonderful employees that needed full time work.  He thought reopening an already existing business was a way to help provide that.  Over the late winter / early spring Bill completely renovated the space and bought all new equipment for the shop.  It is the first in the area to sport the new concept and design of the Subway chain, and the changes are evident throughout the shop.

Subway reopened on May 15th and has a staff of twelve. “We have students from both high schools, Garrett College students, retirees as well as some single moms. It’s a nice mix of staff and they have worked hard all summer.  We’ve been able to work around their schedules so it can work for everyone involved,” says Bill.  He and Manager Cheryl Dennison along with Maura McCann, Manager at Deep Creek Donuts attended Subway University in Hartford earlier this spring for two weeks and learned a lot about the business and its operations.

“I have to say I was very impressed with their new direction,” says Bill. “In addition to new logo and design concept, the company is emphasizing quality and freshness of the food served and has a lot of new ideas and products they will be launching.”

Every month, Subway offers a new sandwich offering, available for a limited time only.  For the month of September, be sure to look for the BBQ Brisket sandwiches and the introduction of Subway sliders.  Says Cheryl, “The sliders, which are delicious by the way, are available with Turkey, Ham and Pepperjack Cheese, Steak and Italian.  They are the perfect size and only cost $1.99 each.”

One thing hasn’t changed…their trademark delicious and affordable made to order sandwiches.  Customers choose one of seven freshly baked breads, customize their meats and cheeses and add toppings and condiments of their choice.  Many menu items remain the same today as they did 50 years ago — Meatballs in Marinara, Spicy Italian, Steak & Cheese, Coldcut Subs, Tuna Salad and standards like turkey and Roast Beef remain some of the store favorites.  You’ll also find popular additions like Buffalo or Rotisserie Chicken, Chipotle sauce, fresh mozzarella, guacamole and more.

Those looking for healthier or low carb alternatives can enjoy a wrap or one of Subway’s salads — custom made with your choice of veggies, meats, and seasonings.  “You can literally turn any sandwich into a salad,” says Bill.  “The possibilities at Subway are enormous — there are many ways to switch it up and try something new.”  With several choices of chips, the addition of soup for fall, and fresh baked cookies, you’ll never leave hungry.

Not only does Subway offer monthly specials and limited time offers, the advent of fall will mean other new flavors for Subway lovers including Caramel Apple cookies and Peach Harvest Juice.

Subway even offers breakfast sandwiches — egg, cheese and your choice of bacon , black Forest Ham or steak on flatbread which are served all day.  They also have catering services and have a variety of large platters available for parties or work events.  You can see (and order!) their entire catering menu online at subway. Com. While there, be sure to download the app where you can order and pay online and have your lunch or dinner ready made and waiting for pick up.

Subway is located lakefront at Traders Landing on Garrett Highway (Rt. 219).  Docks are available and the shop is open daily from 9 AM to 9 PM.  Stop by soon for a quick, delicious lunch or dinner – affordable enough for the entire family.
